California Department of Public Health Lead Sampling Assessor conducts Lead Clearance Inspections to ensure that all of AEG’s recommendations have been met and the lead clearance dust levels are considered acceptable for the treated areas.

The HUD Guidelines has provided different recommendations for the amount of dust wipe samples to be collected according to where and how the lead-containing and/or LBP renovation, repair and/or abatement occurred. For renovation and/or repair that occurred within a dwelling with no containment, a minimum of two (2) dust samples from at least four (4) rooms in the dwelling, treated or untreated, should be collected; one (1) interior floor sample and one (1) interior window sill or window trough (if present). For common areas, one (1) floor sample should be collected for every 2,000 square feet.

For renovation and/or repair that occurred within a dwelling with a containment, a minimum of two (2) dust samples shall be collected from every treated room, up to four rooms; one (1) interior floor sample and one (1) interior window will or window trough (if present). For common areas, one (1) floor sample should be collected for every 2,000 square feet.

For renovation and/or repair that occurred on the exterior of a dwelling, a minimum of two (2) dust samples should be collected; one (1) sample from a horizontal surface in the treated area and one (1) exterior window trough sample from each floor treated. One additional exterior window trough sample should be collected from below any exterior window troughs that were treated to determine if the upper treatment affected the lower trough.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed clearance levels for lead dust levels, as determined by wipe sampling that are specific to the surface sampled. Floor dust lead levels must be at a level less than or equal to 40 micrograms per square foot (≤40 µg/ft²), interior horizontal surfaces dust lead levels must be at a level less than or equal to 250 micrograms per square foot (≤250 µg/ft²) and window troughs dust lead levels must be at a level less than or equal to 400 micrograms per square foot (≤400 µg/ft²).
